Two Types of Hydraulic Oil Additives

by | Nov 30, 2022 | Business

A hydraulic system is dependent upon a lubricant or fluid to operate successfully. Introducing an additive to the base oil or other fluid is a means of further improving the ongoing function of the hydraulic system. Hydraulic oil additives, when blended in – in the right quantity and type, will improve the efficiency and efficacy of the lubricant.

Categories of Hydraulic Oil Additives

A hydraulic oil additive may be organic or inorganic. It may be listed according to its purpose or chemical composition. It may also be divided into either of these two categories:

  1. Surface-active additives
  2. Active additives

Such classification is based on the additive’s specific action. In the case of surface-active additives, a film is formed, coating the surface of the base metal or metals to provide or enhance various qualities. The most common types are:

  • Friction modifiers
  • Rust inhibitors
  • Wear inhibitors

On the other hand, active hydraulic oil additives enhance, provide or control added qualities differently. For example, a viscosity index improver is an additive that, instead of coating the metal, works with the lubricant to thicken it. This ensures a more stable viscosity and a lubricant capable of protecting the equipment at high and low temperatures.

Hydraulic Oil Additives

Additives are required in lubricants to improve their physical and chemical properties as well as their performance. The right additive also helps maintain longevity and long-term stability. In hydraulic systems, additive lubricant oils are essential. Without them, the systems would no longer be able to function optimally.
