Mistakes to Avoid With Wall Mounted Wine Racks

by | Oct 29, 2018 | Wine Storage

When considering what wall mounted wine rack to buy, it helps to first think of the area where it is mounted and the spirits stored in the rack. Just remember that the main purpose of storing wine is to prolong the life of the spirit.

Wine bottles should be stored laying on their side, so the cork stays moist and does not dry out. Keeping the bottle at this angle increases the longevity of the wine. In addition, storing the wine in a wall mounted wine rack will allow the wine to rest in an environment that is relatively constant in temperature which also increases the longevity and helps to prevent the wine from turning to vinegar.

Wine turns to vinegar when too much oxygen is dissolved into the wine. By storing the wine bottle on its side in a wine rack, you reduce the chance for oxidation.

Wall mounted wine racks are perfect for storing wines. They are not only aesthetically pleasing, but some are also climate controlled which preserves the wine. Since wall mounted wine racks can become heavy when bottles are added it is best to secure the wine rack to wall studs for extra support. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation recommendation for safety reasons.

Heat can also cause damage to unopened bottles of wine. When installing a wall mounted wine rack, make sure it is well away from any heat source such as a furnace or stove. When wine is exposed to elevated levels of heat, the wine can taste cooked or like dried fruit. Some signs of heat damage to an unopened bottle of wine is the cork pushed up or drip stains on the outside of the bottle. Generally, exposure to heat above 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit can damage wines.

If heat damage is suspected, then the bottle should be discarded.
