Should You Invest in Canvas Floater Frames for Your Photos or Art?

by | Feb 9, 2018 | Photo Shop

Displaying photos and art prints is a time-honored way of adding color, vibrancy, warmth and beauty to homes and workplaces. You have any number of options for doing so, too. For instance, with photos, you could create a collage.

On the other hand, you could go big with a conventionally framed canvas, or you might opt for a sleek, modern, minimal frame that puts the focus on the print. Canvas floater frames are also options, and they’re growing in popularity. What are they and are they right for your specific needs?

What Are Canvas Floater Frames?

Canvas floater frames are actually self-explanatory. They’re frames designed to hold a printed canvas, but to do so in such a way that it makes it look like your print is floating within the frame, rather than being held in the frame. It’s a little like the concept of a shadow box, but there’s more to it to understand.

There are many different options when it comes to canvas floater frames. One of the most important is the depth offered by the frame. This will determine many things, including just how pronounced the floating effect is with your picture. Generally, more depth is needed with larger canvases, and less depth is needed with smaller canvases. However, you need to make sure that the frame can accommodate your canvas. You can check this by measuring the canvas from front edge to back edge.

You also need to consider the size of the frame itself. Obviously, it needs to fit your work of art or photo print, and it should leave enough room on the top, bottom and sides for the depth effect to work. Note that most frame sizes show the interior dimensions of the frame – the area where your art will be displayed – not the exterior dimensions. However, those are important, too, as they will affect where you can hang the frame.

Finally, you may want to consider open back canvas floater frames. These come with no backing material at all, and essentially mount around your print, rather than holding the print against a backing.
