Generous Military Scholarships Available for Dependents of Veterans

Did you know that all four branches of the U.S. armed forces offer generous military dependent scholarships? As a sign of gratitude to the sacrifices that U.S. military personnel have made, the U.S. government offers generous programs to assist the education of their children and families.

There are also special programs for the dependents of soldiers killed or maimed in the line of duty. Each program has its own unique eligibility requirements, so those who wish to apply would do well to research the programs thoroughly. Many other organizations exist that can assist veterans and their families.

Army

  • The Overseas Spouse Education Assistance Program provides college aid to spouses of personnel currently stationed overseas who are taking a minimum of 6 credits per semester.
  • The Spouse Education Assistance Program assists spouses of active-duty personnel who are enrolled at least part time, for fall and spring semesters only.
  • Survivors & Dependents Assistance Program is available to children aged 16-26 of army personnel who were killed, declared MIA, or captured. This program offers up to 45 months of assistance for approved university, graduate, or vocational study.

Air Force

  • The Scholarship for Air Force Enlisted Member’s Dependent Children provides $500-$3000 of support to the education of currently enlisted personnel who meet certain academic standards.
  • The Scholarship for Air Force Enlisted Member’s Dependent Children awards $3000 based on need to the children of current active-duty personnel.
  • The AFSA Scholarship Program provides $1500-$2500 merit-based awards to dependents.

Navy

  • The NMCRS Gold Star Scholarship Program offers $500 to $2500 per academic year to dependents of personnel killed in the line of duty who maintain a 2.0 average.
  • The Joseph A. McAlinden Divers Scholarship provides $500-$3000 to children of active-duty personnel who are studying oceanography, aquaculture, or ocean agriculture.

These wonderful programs are only some of the options available for military dependent scholarships. There are many others as well, including for children of Coast Guard personnel.
