In the past, wastewater was simply disposed of by injecting it deep into the earth at depths of as much as 10,000 feet. The water was encased in porous formations of rock that held it in place. Environmental Concerns
Even with the most strict handling of wastewater, accidents can and do still occur. When accidents happen, however, not only do they contaminate the ground in the area of the wastewater but they lead to fines and other penalties as well.
