Choosing Portable Fish Finders The Easy Way

If you’re like many, you enjoy heading out on the boat and fishing whenever you get the chance. Many people enjoy fishing but dislike it when they don’t catch anything all day. The best way to beat the water is to use portable fish finders, as they’ll provide a graphic representation of what’s around and beneath your boat. Choosing one can be hard with all the options, so it’s helpful to have an idea of what is out there and what you need.

Network, Combo, Standalone Options

The standalone variety had nothing else with it and just lets you see what’s below you. They’re usually less expensive and work well for boats with a variety of displays already onboard.

The combo version is a chartplotter and fishfinder together. They work well for mid-sized boats and offer GPS navigation, as well.

The network option provides a variety of data options, including raster, radar, vector GPS charts, SiriusXM radio, video, Bluetooth and more. These are the most expensive and may not be necessary for the average boater.

Specifications

When considering portable fish finders, it’s important to focus on all the specifications, such as pixels, size and more. Some pixelations allow you to see almost everything, just as you would looking out your window. Others have very limited graphics and may just appear as dark dots.

Likewise, the size of finder you pick is also important. Because of their portability, you may be able to get away with a smaller size screen, as you can carry it along wherever you go on the boat. You’ll also want something that is comfortable to hold in your hand or can be set down safely with suction cups.

Transducer Type

Portable fish finders may or may not come with transducers. The transducer aims a beam down into the water, either underneath, down the side, or all around, to determine where marine life is located.
