Best Time for Striper Fishing

by | Nov 9, 2021 | Fishing

Have you gone fishing early in the morning to catch striped bass and were disappointed? Even though mornings are the best to catch most varieties of fish, the striped bass is an elusive and unpredictable fish species.

Ideal Time to Maximize Your fishing Experience

Factors such as time of day, weather, tide, and time of the year determine the best time for striper fishing. You are most likely to have an easier catch during their most active feeding hours, which is either before sunrise or right before sunset. However, most surf anglers will tell you to become a night owl if you want to catch the biggest striped bass. At night, they are not as careful, and they move closer to shore, where there’s a pool of bait.

In addition, consider the tidal current when you are going fishing. Striped bass is sensitive to tide and currents. They also love structure, so you are more likely to have a successful fishing trip on days when the tide is stronger, especially along the shoreline. A tide stirs up sediment which baitfish feed on, thus attracting striped bass. If you want to maximize your fishing time, go in the last two hours before the low tide and the first two hours afterwards.

Striped bass is a migratory species that love cooler water. So, the temperature of the water affects how they move and feed. When the water is cooler than 55 degrees, they will move towards a warmer spot to enjoy some time on the water’s surface. Conversely, when the water is warmer than 70 degrees, they go into deeper waters. The ideal time to get these temperatures is between spring and fall.
