HOW TO BUY A GOOD USED TRACTOR

by | Jun 3, 2021 | Business

When you need another tractor, a new tractor may not be in this year’s budget. And, renting may not be the best option if you plan to use the equipment for an extended period of time. However, you can more than likely find a variety of good, used tractors if you know where to look and how to check them out. Here are some tips to help you find the best deal on a used tractor.

Check the Oil Dipstick

You can tell a lot about an engine by looking at the dipstick. Do you notice rust on the stick? If so, this usually indicates setting for long periods without running. Is the oil cloudy or milky looking? Are there bubbles on the dipstick? These things could indicate coolant in the oil which means a bad head gasket or crack in the block.

Start the Engine

As soon as a diesel motor starts, you may see black smoke. This is common and doesn’t mean anything is wrong. However, blue or white smoke is not a good sign from Kubota tractors.

Tires

Examine the tires carefully. Are they wearing evenly? If not, the machine could have suspension problems. Check to see it the steering wheel has a lot of play. If so, it usually means worn front end parts.

Does it Look Too Good To Be True?

Does the tractor have a new coat of paint and all new seals on the cab and engine? If it’s an older machine, this could mean it experienced flooding or a fire. Are there few hours on the machine? If so, the tires, brake pedal, and seat should show little signs of wear and tear. If not, something is wrong with the hour meter.
