Comparison of Fiber Lasers, CO2 Lasers and Plasma Cutting

by | Mar 19, 2020 | Metal Fabrication

When you require metal cutting or engraving on parts or components, it is important to understand the cutting abilities of your service provider and what machines they use. We offer fiber laser cutting, CO2 laser cutting, and plasma cutting service options, and are often asked about the differences of each. We utilize all three of these cutting methods as each provides a different set of benefits. Our value to our customers is our knowledge of when to use a specific cutting machine based on the needs of the project, the metal, its thickness, and other variables.

CO2 Laser Cutting
The CO2 laser cutting technique is best used for cutting plastics or rubbers that do not require high cutting power, but do require precision. A CO2 laser has a large focal length, so it is good for cutting thicker, non-hard metal materials. The laser beam causes the material to melt from the high temperatures produced. Therefore, it does not truly touch the material.

Fiber Laser Cutting
Fiber laser cutting services are the preferred option for harder metals. Our fiber laser cutting machines can handle up to 80” x 160” x 1” thick metal sheets. As fiber laser cutting uses a significantly smaller wavelength than CO2 laser cutting, it allows for deep engravings or cuts that are highly precise. Using a fiber laser is also fast which helps make the overall metal fabrication process more productive.

Plasma Cutting
For metals of a much higher thickness and hardness, our plasma cutting services may be the right option. Plasma cutting is performed through the use of a torch that sends high-speed electricity and compressed gas to make cuts through the metal. Though this process is less efficient than fiber laser cutting, plasma cutting machines can cut through metal sheet up to 15′ x 60′ x 3″ thick.

The Way of Metal Cutting
Whether your project calls for fiber laser cutting, plasma cutting, or any of our other fabrication and laser cutting abilities, our proven design and manufacturing capabilities will exceed your expectations and provide your project with the stability and productivity your company needs.
