Going on vacation has one complication: you’re going to need to leave your pet behind. No worries, though. You can rest easy with the right dog boarders.

Ask about vaccinations

Does the kennel require that your dog be up-to-date with their vaccinations? PetHelpful says, “The last thing you want is to have your dog get sick while you’re away.” In general, it’s prudent to make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up-to-date even if the kennel doesn’t require it.

Check cleanliness

When you check out the facility, keep an eye out for cleanliness. Is the place clean and properly sanitized? Consider how the staff handles animal waste. Do they clean up quickly after a mess is made?

Observe the staff

Not all dog boarders are equal. Be sure you check them out. Are employees at the facility friendly? Do they know how to properly handle dogs of different breeds? Do they care about the dogs? You may also want to check for any signs of abuse towards the dogs. If the dogs shy away from the staff or seem to be afraid, that could be a red flag.

Look for the play area

Will your dog have access to both an indoor and outdoor play area? That could be a consideration if you’re leaving your pooch behind for a few days.

Consider the space

Find out where they’ll put your dog. Is there room enough? Or will your pet feel crowded in? If you have a huge dog, you’ll want to talk to make sure the kennel has the right kind of space for them.

Provide them with a list

Do you have specific care requirements for your dog? Make sure the staff knows what they are. Provide them with a list of specific requirements. That’s going to help them care for your pet better.
