Things to Consider When Buying a Hot Water Heater

Choosing the right water heater can make it, so you have enough available hot water while limiting the overall costs associated with this. Understanding all of the available options and their pros and cons may make this decision easier.

Tanks or Tankless

One of the main decisions to make is whether to purchase a water heater with a tank to store hot water or a tankless, or on-demand, water heater. Those with storage tanks are the most common, but tankless heaters may be more energy efficient although they can’t supply hot water in as high of a quantity or as quickly as those with storage tanks. Homeowners who have smaller spaces for accommodating a Hot Water Heater may want to opt for short or lowboy tanks instead of tall tanks.

Fuel Type

The most common fuel types are electric, and gas or propane but some water heaters are powered by a heat pump or a hybrid power source. An electric water heater is one of the least expensive to purchase while a gas or propane heater will be a bit more expensive initially but is more energy efficient. A gas Hot Water Heater also needs to have air circulating around it and can’t be placed near anything flammable. The most expensive and the most energy efficient are the heat pump and hybrid varieties. These are larger than electric versions and can’t hold as much hot water. Some water heaters can be powered by solar energy or fuel oil, but these aren’t as commonly available. When selecting a new water heater, compare both the initial purchase price plus the price of the necessary fuel to operate the heater in your area. In some cases, a more expensive heater will be the best alternative due to lower operating costs.

Other Considerations

It’s also important to understand how much hot water your household typically uses so you can choose a water heater that is appropriately sized or a combination of water heaters that will meet the needs of the household. Nobody wants to have the hot water run out in the middle of a shower or have to wait to do the dishes until the hot water stores build back up.
